Botox® for Wrinkles and More

Over time all people will start to develop wrinkles and fine lines on the face. When this happens differs from person to person based on factors including genetics, skin quality, degree of facial expression and repetitive movements, weight changes, smoking history and sun exposure history. When speaking of wrinkles on the face we talk of dynamic wrinkles (visible only with movement) and static wrinkles (visible even without movement). The best time to begin treatment is with dynamic wrinkles and progression can be prevented. But even static wrinkles can be treated with very satisfying results.

Common places where wrinkles will begin to show that are amenable to treatment with Botox® include:

frown lines between the eyebrows (glabella) - appear as 2-3 vertical lines and sometimes a horizontal line that can give the face an angry or severe look.

  • at the sides of the eyes (peri-orbital) a fan like array of wrinkles can appear that are commonly called crow's feet.
  • across the forehead horizontal wrinkles can appear.
  • around the mouth (perioral) lines may appear that lipstick may bleed into -(and this can happen in both smokers and non smokers!) that are called smoker's lines or barcodes.

One may also see some other changes that can be treated with Botox® including:

  • the corners of the mouth may turn down giving the appearance of a perpetual frown the chin may appear dippled like an orange peel
  • the eyebrows appear less arched
  • the jaw contour becomes less visible
  • vertical bands may run up the neck to the jaw line (platysmal bands)

For wrinkles that occur as a direct result of facial expression and muscle contraction the treatment of choice is botulinum toxin, better known as Botox®. Tiny amounts of this purified protein are injected into specific facial muscles to relax the movement and allow for the skin to remodel and the lines to fade over                                                         time. Botox® has been used safely in Canada for over 20 years.

Botox® therapy is temporary so repeated treatments are neccessary to sustain the results. Results gradually start to appear after about 3 days and it may take 2 weeks before the full results are seen. Botox® results typically last 3-4 months and may start to last longer if treatments are performed regularly.

A professional medical assessment is require to establish if someone is a good candidate for Botox®, to discuss treatment options and review the possible risks and complications. Botox is priced @$10/unit but the dose ranges for every individual are very customized so detailed pricing can only be discussed at the initial consultaion. As a guide, the pictures below show the typical dose ranges for each treatment area for women and men.
