The Canadian Museum of Civilization

The Canadian Museum of Civilization presents over 10,000 years of Canada's pre-history, history and culture. The Museum building is an architectural masterpiece -- a symbolic depiction of a land sculpted by winds, waters and glaciers at the end of the Ice Age, when humans first crossed into Canada from Asia.

Did You Know?

  • The Canadian Museum of Civilization has the world's largest indoor collection of totem poles.
  • The Museum is wired for global outreach. If you were to lay out the fibre optic cables, they would go around the globe 20 times.
  • At over one million square feet (100,000 square metres), the Canadian Museum of Civilization is one of the world's largest museums.
  • In the near future, the Canadian Museum of Civilization will put 150,000 images of its collections on the web. It is also digitizing 500 artifacts using a unique 3-d colour imaging system invented in Canada. It's one way that the Museum will bring the nation's heritage to its people.
  • Canada's History Comes to Life

photoThe Museum has three major galleries presenting permanent exhibitions where sound, images, and treasures from the collections create memorable impressions of our nation's colourful past.

    1. The Grand Hall celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the aboriginal peoples from the Pacific Northwest Coast of Canada. Designed in cooperation with Native elders and artisans, it features totem poles, cedar plank houses and artifacts from six different coastal nations.
    2. The Canada Hall transports visitors on a journey through Canada's past. Large-scale settings vividly portray key periods in Canadian history from the arrival of Norse adventurers around the year 1000 right up to the settlement of western Canada in the twentieth century.
    3. The First People's Hall showcases the rich diversity of First People's cultures and celebrates aboriginal contributions to the world. The Museum always has temporary exhibitions on archaeology, history, folk culture and ethnology. Some are created at the Museum, others are borrowed from around the world.
    Public Programs and Theatre

The Canadian Museum of Civilization has a full-time theatre company. Costumed characters use drama and humour to bring history and cultural heritage to life.

There is also an extensive, ongoing program of music, dance and film, often with an international flavour.

The giant-screen Theatre presents large format films in the  IMAX® Theatre.
