With more than one million visitors each year, the Canadian Museum of Civilization is a destination of choice in the National Capital Region. An architectural jewel designed by Canadian architect Douglas Cardinal, the Museum is less than five minutes from downtown Ottawa and Parliament Hill.
When you visit, be sure to include the Canadian Children's Museum, our international exhibitions, the Canadian Postal Museum and the IMAX® Theatre as part of your tour.

Audio Tours
The Canada Hall audio tour offers a fast-paced visit through the Museum’s most popular permanent exhibition, depicting 1,000 years of the country’s history. Adventure stories, engaging monologues, anecdotes and music brings the past to life.

The First Peoples audio tour presents the history and continuing contribution of Aboriginal peoples in Canada. Through authentic narration, quotes, songs and legends, the audio tour adds meaning and rhythm to your journey.

Restaurant Café du Musée
The Café du Musée offers a breathtaking view of the Ottawa River and Parliament Hill. It features a tantalizing
menu created by renowned Executive Chef Georges Laurier, who likes to showcase the very best local ingredients in a cooking style he calls "contemporary French cuisine." Private room available. Open daily for lunch and Sundays for brunch.

Paid underground parking available ($1.50 every half-hour; daily maximum is $10.00) and on adjoining streets.

- The Canadian Museum of Civilization has the world's largest indoor collection of totem poles.
- At over one million square feet (100,000 square metres), the Canadian Museum of Civilization is one of the world's largest museums.
- The architectural design of the Museum represents the Canadian Shield, glaciers and their streams, and the Great Plains.
- The Tyndall limestone covering the Museum is embedded with fossils predating the first dinosaurs by some 250 million years.
Canada's History Comes to Life
The Museum has four major galleries presenting permanent exhibitions where sound, images, and treasures from the collections create memorable impressions of our nation's colourful past.
- The Grand Hall celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the aboriginal peoples from the Pacific Northwest Coast of Canada. Designed in cooperation with Native elders and artisans, it features totem poles, cedar plank houses and artifacts from six different coastal nations.
- The First People's Hall showcases the rich diversity of First People's cultures and celebrates aboriginal contributions to the world. The Museum always has temporary exhibitions on archaeology, history, folk culture and ethnology. Some are created at the Museum, others are borrowed from around the world.
- The Canada Hall transports visitors on a journey through Canada's past. Large-scale settings vividly portray key periods in Canadian history from the arrival of Norse adventurers around the year 1000 right up to the settlement of western Canada in the twentieth century.
- Face to Face: The Canadian Personalities Hall presents outstanding Canadians – men and women whose ideas and contributions have transformed this country.

The Canadian Children's Museum
The Canadian Children's Museum invites young spirits to embark on the Great Adventure-a trip around the world. Everything is kid-sized, hands-on and totally interactive.
The Canadian Postal Museum
Postal communications are presented and celebrated at the Canadian Postal Museum's gallery.
IMAX Theatre
The IMAX Theatre offers a unique perspective on history, culture, adventure and nature through an array of stunning films that touch and inspire
Public Programs and Theatre
The Canadian Museum of Civilization has a full-time theatre company, called Dramamuse. Costumed characters use drama and humour to bring history and cultural heritage to life.
There is also an extensive, ongoing program of music, dance and lectures, often with an international flavour.
Facility Rentals
The Museum offers a wide choice of multi-purpose spaces for small groups or large gatherings of up to 1,200 people.
