Custom Framing. Custom framing for paper pieces is divided into levels of preservation or conservation. Conservation framing refers to techniques that either limit or eliminate risks of damage to the artwork that could be caused by the interaction of moisture, pollution and uv light, and also from the use of acid and lignen bearing materials that are in contact with the artwork. Furthermore, conservation framing must be completely reversible without damage to the artwork.

Museum Framing is the highest level of preservation. The glazing must be at least 97% uv filtering. Framewave uses Tru Vue (TM) Conservation Clear , Conservation Reflection Control, or Museum Glass. Any of these will reduce damaging uv light transmission by 99%. The matting must be cotton rag mat and the artwork can be hinged to the mat with Japaneses Hinges made with acid free paper strips and starch paste or affixed to the archival backing board by way of four acid free corner holders. The back dust seal is acid-free paper.

Conservation Framing requires the same level of glazing as for Museum Framing. The matting must be acid-free but not necessarily rag. Framewave uses Artique (TM) museum quality mats. The artwork is hinged to the mat with Filmoplast  P90 archival tape*. The backing board is acid free foam core and the back dust seal is kraft paper.

*Please note that Filmoplast P90 passes all the criteria for conservation except for complete reversibility. Upon applicatioin of water, the tape will remove easily from the artwork but it leaves a slight inert residue where it contacts the back of the artwork.

'Regular Framing' is only recommended for expendable pieces. The glazing used is Tru Vue Premium Clear which provides a minimal uv protection.  Artwork is hinged to the back of the mat, if a mat is used, with masking tape and the backing board is corrugated cardboard.

Poster Framing: Framewave provides a special price list for poster frames using the “regular framing”  method and a simple metal frame to keep the look clean and simple and the cost way down.

Canvas and Needle Work Stretching: Framewave will stretch your brand new or previously stretched canvas on to stretcher bars to prepare the work for framing. Available as a stand alone service  for an extra charge. Needle work is stretched as part of an entire frame order.

Mounting and Lamination: Mounting is a process that affixes the artwork to a rigid backing. Mounting can take waviness or slight ripples out of the artwork. It is generally not reversible or not without damaging or destroying the artwork and as a result is never recommended for anything other than posters. The most common lamination consists of mounting to medite with a plastic facing laminated over the surface. This process is also irreversible.

Shadow Box / Object Framing: Framewave frames objects of all sizes and shapes in deep frames known as shadow boxes. Items we've framed include, just to name a few:

      • Sports jerseys/ equipment
    • Puzzles
    • Medals/ coins
    • Musical instruments
    • Dance shoes/ baby booties
    • wedding and christening dresses

Engraved Metal Plates: Engraved metal plates in a variety of materials, colours and styles can be added to any frame treatment to add reference text – names, dates, events, etc.

Free Frame Inspection: When reframing a piece its not always necessary to replace all components. The most expensive part of your framing is normally your frame itself. If you are looking for a change but would like to keep the frame, we can inspect it for structural integrity. If its still in good shape it may be a case of just upgrading the glazing or matting. Conversely, the frame alone can be changed, keeping the mats and glazing.

Paper and Canvas Art Restoration: Framewave's restoration service can turn an old dingy discoloured and damaged  pieces back to brand new. Price will be determined on a case by case basis after complete inspection by our certified restorationalist.

Photo Restoration: Framwave can arrange for photo restoration of works we will be framing. Price  to be quoted  on inspection subject to condition of original and size of original and copy.
