Children’s (Pediatric) Dental Care

Your family members should start seeing their Ottawa dentist as soon as possible to prevent as many potential problems as possible. Children can be prone to tooth decay and cavities and therefore you should make sure all your little ones are booked in for regular check-ups.

Your Ottawa dentist will teach you the best methods for keeping your child’s mouth as healthy as possible.

It’s important to remember that there are different techniques used on children compared to adults so here are a few helpful tips:

Baby Teeth- It doesn’t have to start at the dentist! As soon as your baby’s teeth start to poke through, you should start cleaning them. You can do this by using a clean, soft washcloth or by using a very soft children’s toothbrush (make sure you let it sit in warm water prior to use to make sure it’s as soft as possible). When your baby gets a little older, you can introduce children’s toothpaste. You would need no more than a pea-sized amount of toothpaste and make sure there’s no fluoride (until they’re about six months old). This will help also help your child to get into the routine when they get older but do make sure to consult your Ottawa dentist beforehand.

First Visit- Your child should see an Ottawa dentist by the age of one so that they can make sure everything’s looking good. This will also help to familiarise your child with the dentists office and hopefully when they get older, it wont seem so daunting.

Flossing- You will have to assist your child with their flossing until they’re about six years of age. Hopefully, by that time they will be happy and comfortable to take care of it themselves. You should begin flossing with your child when you see two teeth next to each other as that’s where the bacteria can hide.

Fluoride treatments- Fluoride is not only very effective at preventing many common tooth problems but it also helps the teeth become more resilient to acid attacks and decay. It’s important to note that too much fluoride can be dangerous for a child so you need to find the right balance and you can do this with the help of your Ottawa dentist.

Mouth Washing- It’s recommended that your child wait until about the age of seven for this task. Make sure that they fully understand the rules and once you’re both happy, they can give it a go.

As with all the techniques listed, it’s useful to note that there are many children friendly products which will help to keep your child as safe as possible while they’re maintaining their healthy smile. Please consult your Ottawa dentist for further details.
