Standard Dentist Services
There are many different dentists in Ottawa that offer standard procedures aimed at maintaining the general health of your mouth. Here’s a list of services that your Ottawa dentists may offer:
Bleaching- This is a popular treatment where the teeth are whitened to enable a brighter smile. Some procedures are done in the dentists office and some are available to take home and be completed yourself, in your own time. Consult your Ottawa dentist on which one is right for you.
Bridges- This is a term used for when there is an area of teeth missing and a bridge is placed. It can either be a permanent, fixed bridge or a temporary removable one.
Cleaning- This is a very important procedure that should be carried out about every six months (some people may need to go to their Ottawa dentist more often). When you arrive for a cleaning you should expect to have any plaque (soft film of bacteria) removed as well as any tartar that has built up. This is a relatively painless procedure but you may experience some scraping sounds or tickling vibrations.
After the cleaning is finished you will probably have your teeth polished. This is where your teeth are made to feel super clean and smooth and the procedure is done using a soft rubber cup that applies a gritty toothpaste.
Crowns- Crowns are usually made out of porcelain or gold. When your tooth has started to decay or erode away, or it has been broken, a crown is used to cap the top of the tooth to restore its natural shape.
Examinations- This is usually done at the beginning of your visit to an Ottawa dentist in order to determine the overall health status of your mouth. You will have a set of x-rays taken which will enable the dentist to see the structure of your roots and bones. An oral cancer screening and a check for any signs of periodontal disease should also be expected.
Extractions- If one of your teeth has gone beyond repair, or it is negatively impacting the rest of your mouth, it may need to be removed. Usually, you will receive an injection into your gums before it’s extracted which will numb the area and prevent any further discomfort.
Fillings- When a dentist spots a cavity (a small hole in your tooth) they will fill it with a silver or white substance. This stops any other bacteria getting into the cavity and further damaging your tooth. If left untreated, the problem can get much worse so please talk to your Ottawa dentist to help prevent any bigger problems.
