Festival Highlights ( August 11th-August 21st 2016)

The Zorba Show

OPA !…… It's ZORBA TIME GreekFest's world-famous Zorba Show is a treat for both young and old. It takes the audience back to a time when Greek men would head to their local tavernas to drown their sorrows away in drink and dance. The term "Zorba" was made famous by the 1960s film Zorba the Greek. Since then, the theme music from the movie is recognized worldwide and is a tune that conjures up images of Greece to all who hear it. The Zorba Show has entertained Ottawa for many years, giving the crowds a show full of acrobatics, fire, and of course, plate breaking! Each year the GreekFest organizers find the very best Zorba dancers to perform for our visitors. We also round up talented female dancers of Greek heritage to dance alongside the famous Zorba dancers in this incredible show! A show full of high-energy, passion, and even humour, made complete with the distinctive sound of the bouzouki! It is an experience that can't be missed!

Fine Greek Cuisine

Nothing brings you closer to being in Greece than the aroma and flavours of it's excellent cuisine. Picture yourself in a little Taverna on the side of a mountain overlooking the Aegean Sea sipping retsina wine or a glass of ouzo and dining on some lamb and a fresh greek salad. Mmmmm....doesn't that sound good? You don't have to travel all the way there to live this dream, we have brought that little bit of paradise straight to you. We invite you to "experience Greece in your own backyard!"

Café Ouzeri - Specializing in Greek Desserts & Coffee

Nothing will satisfy your sweet tooth more than one of our delicious Greek desserts. There are many different kinds of desserts to try, each offering it's own sinful pleasure! Of course don't feel you have to limit yourself to one, you can always work off the calories by dancing the night away!

One of the Festival favourites is Baklava. It consists of layer upon layer of buttered filo pastry with ground walnuts. Topped with a honey syrup. Another MUST TRY is our mouth watering Loukoumades. They are featherlight deep fried honey puffs, dipped in syrup and sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar.

Don't forget to order a greek coffee with your dessert to wash it all down, but please be careful, you aren't supposed to drink the grinds at the bottom!!!!

Live Greek Music

One of the biggest highlights at the festival is the LIVE MUSIC! This year we will have feature bands that will help bring the feeling of Greece into our hearts. What makes greek music so unique and festive is the sound of the bouzouki. There is no other instrument like it. When you combine it with the other instruments in the band, you can't help but tap your feet and sing along!

  • Yiannis Kapoulas
  • George Gritziotis
  • Eleni Alexandris
  • Mandia Nantsios

Feature Dance Groups
Traditional dance is deeply ingrained in Hellenic Culture. Our history is not only communicated and passed down through spoken word, but through the visual language of dance. Not only is the movement important, but so is the accompanying song who's lyrics focus on a number of topics and occasions. These include village society and daily life, relationships, loss, hope, war, and spirituality. Each region in Greece is unique and identifiable in it's instrumentation and it's traditional costume. We look forward to presenting to you the importance and relevance of folklore in our culture.

Greek Cooking Demonstrations - by The 3 Greek Sisters

The Three Sisters will be holding daily cooking seminars from Aug, 16-19. Don't miss this opportunity to experience the Three Sisters heartwarming family recipes. Betty, Eleni & Samantha will be sharing their recipes during their daily food seminars taking place in the Church Basement.

Arts and Culture Court

Our Arts & Culture court features a number of artists displaying their work of Greece and Canada through their eyes. This is a must see when visiting the GreekFest. If you haven't been to Greece before or even if you have, the arts & culture court is a perfect place to lose yourself in the dream of being there!

Church Tours
The day would not be complete without taking a tour of our Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church.
We offer daily tours in English and French. Our helpful guides are always keen to answer any of your questions. We have a special tour just for kids on our family days! Please check the festival schedule for times.

Why do we celebrate August 15th?
August 15th is a very special day for our Greek community. It is the nameday of our Church The Dormition of the Virgin Mary.
In August, we begin to prepare ourselves for one of the most important Feast Days on the Ecclesiastical Calendar, viz., the Falling Asleep of the Virgin Mary.

Her falling asleep in the Lord occurred on the 15th of August and therefore we celebrate this date as the day of the Repose (Dormition) of the Holy Mother, or in Greek, (Kimissis tis Theotokou). The word “Theotokos” is a Greek word which literally translates as “God-bearer”, which is another descriptive name for the Holy Mother.

In preparation for this solemn feast, Orthodox Christians observe a period of spiritual discipline during the first fifteen days of August. Persons named Maria, Mary, Panayiota (Peggy-Penny) Panayiotis (Peter), Despina or any other variation of these names, celebrate on this date.

Kids Activities

Hey kids!! There is so much to see & do here at GreekFest. Why not get your face painted, try a greek baking workshop, tour our church, play some arcade games (in the reception centre) and don't forget your greekfest balloon!! Family Days - Saturday Aug. 18th & 25th
