Booking Directly vs. Through A Travel Agent

When you’ve found the hotel in Ottawa that’s right for you, the next step you have to take is to book your accommodation. Depending on your preference, you may book online, call directly or go through a travel agent. Here are a few tips to help you decide which way is best to book your hotel in Ottawa.

Calling the hotel directly
In my opinion, sometimes it’s best to call the hotel directly. Then you can speak to someone in the flesh, get a confirmation number and subsequently have the most up to date information on the rooms available. When you’re on the phone to them, you can ask if there’s any chance of an upgrade as the hotel might not be busy etc.

Booking though a travel agent (phone or online)
There have been mixed reviews on this particular method of booking your Ottawa hotel. Some people find that by using this method, you can get some great details on how to save money and in turn, get the most for your stay. Others have found that there’s a lot of potential red tape when trying to book through an agent. For example, when you’ve found the hotel you want to stay in and you’re ready to book, some agencies can only put you on a “request room” list. This, as you can imagine, can be very annoying as there’s no guarantee that you’ll actually get the room even though you spoke to the agency two weeks in advance.

Booking online (directly)
This can be a great way to book a hotel if you’re at work, abroad or just unable to find some free time to get to the phone. If you haven’t stayed at this particular hotel in Ottawa, booking online offers you a chance to have a look at some photos, the facilities and even the food menus so you’ll know exactly what to expect before you get there. One of the main drawbacks for booking online is that it isn’t always 100% up-to-date and therefore you could risk your chances of getting that room. There aren’t many ways to avoid this apart from calling the hotel directly to confirm (which could give you peace of mind, if nothing else). Make sure to always write down the confirmation number and bring it with you to the hotel so if there’s any confusion, it should be dealt with much quicker.
