Hotel Star Ratings

The star rating system for Ottawa’s hotel and accommodation is based on the quality of areas such as facilities, amenities and services. Basically, the higher the star rating is, the better the accommodation. There are cases where the hotel can receive ½ stars (e.g. 2 ½ stars) which is perfectly acceptable. (The stars are actually awarded in ½ star increments). It’s really the overall quality of the accommodation and the hotel as well as what extra facilities they have on offer. Each star holds a certain standard and the hotel will not be awarded it if it doesn’t completely comply.

The stars run from 1-5 and the breakdown is as follows:

* A one star rating should reflect that the accommodation is clean and liveable. It must sufficiently meet the nationally accepted criteria standard for amenities within hotels. At this level, you can expect the accommodation to be clean and enjoyable. The room size will be adequate as will the clothes storage. There should be fresh linens, a sufficient door lock as well as secure window fittings and there should be parking. A smoke detector should also be installed.

** The two star award is commonly known as the “mid-range” type of accommodation. It is of a higher quality than the one star in terms of beds/linen, there will be more seating areas/furniture/fixtures and there must also be parking.

*** The three star rating is generally thought of as above average and very acceptable. The accommodation will be larger with extra furniture, the bed/linens will be of a higher standard, the accommodation will have more of a coordinated feel, there should be a clock/alarm and a washroom is a must. (To gain three stars, there must always be a private washroom).

**** The quality expected with a four star rating is of exceptional standards, not just in the room, but throughout the entire property. The accommodation will have everything that the lesser stars offer and more. The common areas should be well kept and there should be more services on offer including valet parking, laundry and numerous other amenities.

***** The five star rating should be of the highest quality throughout the accommodation and the entire hotel. This rating is recognised at a world class standard and the hotel should boast outstanding guest services, amenities and facilities.
