Ottawa Hotel Tipping

Tipping is an important part of receiving good quality service. If you’re getting all your questions answered by the concierge, or the bellhop brings your luggage up promptly, why not show them your appreciation? While tipping may not be expected at all hotels, it is considered customary at most. When you’re staying at a hotel in Ottawa, it’s useful to know what sort of standards are expected when tipping certain people.

Here’s a breakdown:
Valet: $2 (more if the weather isn’t great)

Doorman: $2 (more if they get you a cab promptly)

Bellhop: $2-$3 (more if the bags are brought to your room quickly or if there’s a lot of luggage). If they actually show you around and get you used to how everything in your hotel room works, tip them more around $5 - $10.

Shuttle Driver- $1 - $2 per person (more for a group of you)

Concierge- $2- $20 (depending on the amount of time taken or attention to detail)

Room Service- 18% of the bill. Don’t forget to check and see if the tip has already been added to your bill.

Maid Service- $1 - $5. You can leave this after each night of your stay or you can leave a tip at the end (although, you may not be tipping the same maid that cleaned your room perfectly all the other nights). If your room is extra messy, you should bump the tip up accordingly.

You don’t need to tip the maintenance staff who come in to your hotel room to fix something that’s broken etc. but you are expected to tip the hotel staff who bring you extra items such as blankets and pillows ($1- $2 an item is sufficient).

Of course, those are only guidelines designed to give you an idea of the amount you should be aiming for. But if someone at the hotel is doing an outstanding job, feel free to give them what they deserve. Like waitresses, people in these professions rely quite heavily on their tips and therefore they really do try their best to make your stay in Ottawa enjoyable.

Just make sure you have some small change available regularly in order to show your appreciation!
