Since the 1840's farmers
from West Quebec and the Ottawa Valley have set up shop in the market just
east of Sussex Drive and north of Rideau Street. The stalls are filled
with local produce, flowers, and maple syrup. Restaurants, nightlife,
gourmet shops and boutiques are an integral part of market life. The two
story ByWard Market Building (1927) was recently renovated and has
reopened as a gourmet food market. The building also houses numerous
shops carrying fine crafts by artisans from across the region.
