Ottawa Getaways - Picton

Countryside touring between Kingston and Prince Edward County brings travellers to the very heart of Loyalist Ontario. Highway 33 follows the shoreline of Lake Ontario through towns such as Amherstview, Bath and Adolphustown—each one a snapshot of small town charm and rich in historic sites and museums, tea rooms and antique shops. Highway 33 provides the opportunity to arrive in Prince Edward County by way of the Glenora Ferry, an entirely appropriate introduction to a land where bright blue Lake Ontario is never far from view.

Attractions that are recommended include:
  • Majesty Charters
Private charters and themed public tours from Picton Harbour are available: blues, history, children’s, murder mystery, casino, to name but a few, and can include winery tours. Creative on-board catering is based on excellent local cheese, game and produce.

  • The Regent Theatre
An 1918 Edwardian vaudeville house beautifully refurbished to provide modern comfort with historic ambiance. First run and art films, a cini-fest, authors' readings, art auctions, concerts, and local and touring theatre are enjoyed year-round.

  • Sandbanks Provincial Park
Sandbanks is home to the world’s largest freshwater sand dune system, the magnificent result of 12,000 years of glaciation, wind and water. The active surf here is rated topnotch by sailboarders and the broad, perfectly white sand beaches have a large and loyal following of sun lovers each summer. Park staff host an active program of interpretive events.

  • Prince Edward County
Those who hold a beautiful landscape in high regard find the backroads of Prince Edward County a joy to behold—a landscape of meticulously tidy family farms and wild shoreline. Uncrowded roadways provide idyllic cycling, and Bloomfield, Wellington and Cherry Valley make pleasant, art studio-rich stops along the way.

Prince Edward County’s abundant agricultural production has led to several worthwhile attractions:

  • County Cider
In the tradition of fine British cider makers and European wineries, County Cider Company produces Ontario’s favourite ciders. Visitors stroll through the orchard to take in the spectacular view of Prince Edward Bay, Waupoos Island and the surrounding countryside.

  • Peddlesden Wines
Peddlesden Wines is committed to producing the finest wines using imported rootstocks and clones from French and German nurseries, and employing only old world winemaking techniques. Winery tours are available and fine dining is available at the Vines Restaurant.

A little ways from the "County," but well worth the drive, is the following attraction:

  • Native Renaissance II
Native Renaissance II specializes in original Native artwork: original stone carvings by Thomas B. Maracle, reproductions, leather accessories, candles, moccasins, silver and turquoise jewelry. A highlight is a 5,00-square-foot mural of an ancient Native village.
