Canada's Capital Region is the
fourth largest metropolitan area in Canada, with a population
of just over one million people. The Ottawa region the highest
percentage of Internet users in Canada. This can be attributed
to the area residents' high level of education and the impressive
number and variety of government
and private research institutions, as well as a large number
of high-technology and other businesses that require a highly
connected labour force.
The region was also the location of Canada's first FreeNet
site, and is today the second-largest in the world, with more
than 60,000 subscribers.
The Ottawa region also has a strong Internet-access sector,
with almost 30 local Internet service providers.
The proportion of local households with a personal computer
was 56 per cent in 1997, the highest of any city in Canada.
