Many beautiful and architecturally-pleasing churches are found in Ottawa, the majority of which were built in the 19th century. St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, founded in 1828 on Kent Street, is Ottawa's oldest Protestant church. The Cathedral Basilica of Notre Dame, erected in 1839 on Sussex Drive, has soaring twin spires and is one of the finest examples of painted and carved neo-Gothic interiors in Canada. Saint Patrick's Basilica on Kent Street at Nepean Street was founded in 1855 and is the oldest parish in Ottawa serving English-speaking Catholics; Saint Patrick's was elevated to Basilica status in 1995.

Founded in 1832, Christ Church Cathedral, the stately stone church at the upper end of "Bytown," now Ottawa, is the capital city's Anglican Cathedral for state occasions and daily worship alike. It is particularly renowned for its superb choir and stained glass windows.
We believe that the church is servant, priest and prophet, and that it is always the Church of Jesus Christ, not of the people, who make up its congregations.
This historic Church has served the people of Ottawa since 1914. The stone Romanesque architecture and Byzantine sanctuary includes a magnificent 4-manual Casavant organ. We welcome visitors to worship with us. Programming for all ages includes Christian Education and children's worship. Accessibility provided.
In 1877 Prime Minister Alexander MacKenzie laid the cornerstone of this Heritage Church, founded in 1857. It is affiliated with the Canadian Baptist Federation and is the Canadian Armed Forces garrison church. Standing amidst offices, businesses, the University of Ottawa, the Regional Headquarters and the Court House, the Church is trying to build bridges with this community.
Knox Church, the Presbyterian Church in Canada, is located on the south east corner of Elgin and Lisgar Streets, six blocks south of the National War Memorial. The congregation was founded in 1844, in relation to the Free Church of Scotland. The present Gothic building was dedicated in 1933. The church is accessible to the handicapped. Open weekdays from Lisgar Street. All welcome.

The interior modern Gothic design has been enriched by sacred paintings, stained glass windows, a Casavant pipe organ, marble altars, pulpit, communion railings, and statues. These traditional appointments to God's Glory preserve an atmosphere for private prayer and public worship in the spirit of Vatican II. Saint Patrick's was elevated to the status of Basilica in 1995.

Begun in 1839, its construction was not completed until 1885. Its painted and carved neo-Gothic interior is one of the finest in the country. Its sanctuary is mainly the work of noted Canadian sculptor, Philippe Hébert.
